Christmas in Barcelona is wonderful, but there is nothing like escaping to the south of France, with its humid climate, green vineyards and dense forests to enjoy an authentic getaway with Christmas atmosphere. You probably already know Le Barcarès, the famous Christmas village, but what you may not know is that there are a handful of municipalities near the French border that organize their own Christmas events.
From nativity displays to markets, Christmas fairs and Christmas villages, to medieval castles that illuminate their walls with Christmas lights. A few kilometers from Barcelona (about two hours by car almost always) hides a whole Christmas world that is worth considering for a getaway this Christmas.
If you have already visited the Fira de Santa Llúcia and you are looking for something different without flying to Alsace, the south of France (Occitania and Pyrénées Orientales) offers fairytale villages just a couple of hours from Barcelona. Therefore, we give you a list of eight markets, fairs and Christmas villages in the south of France for a getaway this holiday season.
Le Village de Noël (Le Barcarès)

It is undoubtedly the Christmas theme park par excellence of the area. For 2025, Le Barcarès is once again displaying its 3,000 m² of magic with its emblematic “Lydia” boat surrounded by a natural ice skating rink and a forest of illuminated fir trees. The big novelty of this edition are the new giant light figures and an expanded gastronomic market where melted cheese is king.
In addition, it has a Santa Claus of 18 meters, here we tell you more details.
📍 Location: Jardins du Lydia, Le Barcarès
🗓️ Dates: November 28, 2025 to January 4, 2026

The Magie de Noël (Carcassonne)
The medieval city, a World Heritage Site, is completely transformed. This 2025, the focus is on Place Carnot with its skating rink around the statue of Neptune and Place Gambetta, which hosts the giant Ferris wheel overlooking the Cité. Don’t miss the immersive light show on the ramparts of the Château Condal, which this year tells 2,000 years of Christmas history.

The fabulous market of Perpignan
The capital of Roussillon is the closest and most convenient stop from Barcelona. This year, wooden stalls line the Quai Sébastien Vauban along the canal, creating a beautiful scene with the Ferris wheel in the background. This 2025 stands out for its “Santa Claus Hut” and a special program of children’s choirs and light parades through the historic center.
📍 Location: Quai Sébastien Vauban and Place de la Victoire (Castillet) 🗓️ Dates: From November 28, 2025 to January 4, 2026 💸 Tickets: Free admission
Les Hivernales (Castres)
It is the “hidden” jewel for those looking for something less crowded and very authentic. In 2025, Castres is transformed into a “Giant Storybook”, with an artisan Christmas market that looks like something out of an illustration. Most spectacular are the frescoes of light projected on the facades of the medieval houses on the banks of the Agout River.
📍 Location: Place Jean Jaurès, Castres 🗓️ Dates: From November 28 to December 31, 2025 💸 Tickets: Free access
Le Noël de Collioure

The village of painters trades brushes for garlands. It is a smaller market but with an unparalleled charm thanks to its seaside location. In 2025, the central theme is “The Pirates’ Odyssey” for the big New Year’s Eve party, and throughout the month you can enjoy a market of local artisans and static projections on the emblematic bell tower.
📍 Location: Place du Faubourg and Château Royal, Collioure 🗓️ Dates: December 5, 2025 to January 4, 2026 💸 Tickets: Free access
