Barcelona has given the green light to one of the most ambitious urban development projects in Sants-Montjuïc. The transformation of the well-known Illa Citroën, where the Stellantis automotive group’s facilities are currently located.
This will allow the construction of more than 200 new homes, a large urban park of 22,000 m², new public facilities, shopping areas and improved connections between neighborhoods. All this on a 35,500 m² area bounded by Rambla de Badal, Riera Blanca, Constitució street and Rambla de los Jardins de Sants.
The new planning, initially approved by the Ecology, Urban Planning, Mobility and Housing Commission, provides for the creation of 104 public rental apartments and 110 private housing units with subway parking. It also includes 8,000 m² of land for local facilities, the expansion of the Cavall Bernat school and the incorporation of 1,800 m² of commercial space on the first floor of the new buildings.
A green and accessible park that will provide a backbone for the neighborhood.

One of the main axes of the project is the urban park that will occupy 58% of the total space, with more than 22,000 m² of green areas, pedestrian paths and accessible routes that will connect the Rambla de Badal with the Jardins de la Rambla de Sants. To make this park a reality, the current Stellantis industrial buildings will be demolished, thus integrating a key element in the urban renewal of La Bordeta.
The developer of the private housing will assume the urbanization costs of the park, the result of an agreement signed in July between the City Council and Stellantis España SL, which cedes 14,500 m² of land to the city.
The current proposal is the result of a participatory process initiated in October 2024, in which more than 180 people participated. The idea is that, thanks to the elimination of industrial barriers, it will improve pedestrian mobility and cross connectivity between the Bordeta and Sants-Badal, as well as with the neighboring municipality of L’Hospitalet. It will also facilitate access to the Santa Eulàlia metro station and the Cavall Bernat school.
Planned schedule: works from 2028 onwards
Following this initial approval, the project now enters a two-month public exhibition phase. Once the allegations have been resolved, the City Council Plenary will have to approve it provisionally, and final approval will be granted by the Barcelona Urban Planning Subcommission, which reports to the Generalitat, in 2026.
The redevelopment works are scheduled to begin in 2028, in parallel with the processing of the specific urban planning instruments that will allow the entire transformation to be carried out.
