As every year, the beginning of the school year brings with it changes in public transport fares in Barcelona. After several years of frozen prices thanks to government subsidies, this year the establishment of the final price has been confusing:the central government and the Generalitat took a long time to confirm that they would finally maintain these subsidies and, for its part, the Autoriat Metropolitana del Transport (ATM) has also been slow to pronounce itself on the planned increases.
Finally , the ATM has now announced that it will raise fares by between 2.4% and 3% in response to the need to balance the costs of the system and finance investments in maintenance and improvement of the network.
This increase will result in a minimal rise of just a few cents for most tickets, thanks to the subsidies from the Central Government (30%) and the Generalitat (20%), which will keep prices contained and very similar to those of previous years.
