The controversy is served , and the nativity scene of Barcelona, the one that was installed in Plaça Sant Jaume, has claimed again all the spotlights after the city council has decided to remove it definitively, to install in its place a giant luminous star.
However, the traditional nativity scene has not disappeared, but has changed location: it has moved inside the Barcelona City Hall, specifically to the Pati dels Carruatges, where the classically inspired nativity scene that was usually installed in the Museu Frederic Marés has been installed, thus inaugurating a change in tradition.
We tell you where to find the new traditional nativity scene in Barcelona for Christmas 2024, its theme and what days you can see it.
A maritime-inspired nativity scene
This Christmas 2024, the Association of Nativity Scene Makers of Barcelona has designed a nativity scene that includes the classic scenes, such as the birth, the annunciation and the way of the Kings, along with a representation of St. Francis.
In addition, the crib pays tribute to the centenary of the poet Joan Salvat-Papasseit, inspired by his work in the Moll de la Fusta. Incidentally, it takes the opportunity to make a nod to the recent celebration of the America’s Cup sailing in the city.
The installation, eight meters wide, four meters deep and 70 centimeters high, will feature traditional figures, including the popular caganer.
Dates and visiting hours
The nativity scene will be open to the public from November 29 to January 5, with access through Ciutat street and exit through Sant Miquel square. The schedules will be as follows:
- Monday to Friday: from 11:00 to 19:00.
- Saturdays, Sundays and holidays: from 11:00 to 20:00.
Admission will be free and no reservations will be required.
A giant star, a 15-meter tree… the other Christmas of Plaça Sant Jaume
As we said, Plaça Sant Jaume will not be empty this Christmas. A large 20-pointed luminous star, promoted by the City Council and the Generalitat, will preside over the space, replacing what had always been the great nativity scene of the city.
There will also be a 15-meter Christmas tree and a light show projected on the facades of institutional buildings, which will be repeated every half hour between 18:30 and 22:00.
Christmas at the Palau de la Generalitat
On the other side of the square, the Palau de la Generalitat will also open its doors with a special decoration that includes a giant tió, fir trees and another nativity scene by the Association of Nativity Scene Makers.
The nativity scene of the Palau de la Generalitat can be visited between December 16 and 20, from 17:00 to 21:00.
In addition, on December 14 and 15, the Palau will offer open days from 12:00 to 20:00.
