All languages have an alphabet, and the alphabet of jazz is the soul. Like listening to the first notes of Georgia On My Mind and feeling a connection with every word, even if the lyrics were written decades ago and you have never gone beyond the neighborhood of Gràcia. A trip back in time to 1920’s Louisine that now has its own name and a new destination: We call it Jazz Barcelona. A live concert with which to live the rhythm and emotion of some of the best songs of this genre between dim lights and improvised notes.
Listen to the light crackle of vinyl without a record player and experience timeless tunes like Louis Armstrong’s When The Saints Go Marching In or Billie Holiday’s Summertime within the walls of the iconic Jamboree. Music has the power to make our minds travel to wherever and whenever, and We call it Jazz, to feel that it’s true. Mind you, there are a limited number of seats, so be sure to get your tickets before they sell out.
What is “We call it Jazz”?
We call it Jazz is traveling without a ticket. A live concert in which, for one hour, professional musicians perform some of the classics of the genre, improvise, and demonstrate with every note why it is one of the most popular musical styles. But it goes far beyond a jazz show: it is an experience that recreates the intimate atmosphere of New Orleans in the 1920s.
Small street lamps as the main lighting, urban aesthetics, and the ability to order a drink while listening to the piano and trumpet come together unintentionally. Some will call it “marvel” and others “must repeat”, but in Barcelona we call it We call it Jazz.
Jazz, its origins and the show
Jazz is soul. A lot of it. And, as such, there is no single thing that defines it: asyncopated rhythms, improvisation and sounds that remind us of something but we don’t really know what? And to understand this tutti frutti of characteristics you have to travel to the Louisiana of the happy twenties, where the influence of African-American communities covered the streets with African, European and Caribbean music. Blues and Ragtime are felt on every cobblestone, and jazz soon finds its name and sound.
One that would later reach other states like Chicago or New York becoming not “just” a musical genre, but a form of expression for its performers and a way of escape for the spectators. And now, all that has traveled in space and time with We call it Jazz to Barcelona. A show in which the music is the protagonist and the atmosphere, too.
A journey through some of the most iconic themes of this genre between dim lights and the feeling of being in a live music club in New Orleans, with a drink in your hand.
From the creators of We call it Tango and We call it Ballet, Barcelona once again becomes the place where shows and live music find their safe space, and in the hands of professional musicians. A jazz experience that comes to Barcelona in the coming months and whose doors will open 30 minutes before the start of each show.
Seats are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis (within the area selected when purchasing tickets), so order a drink before the show starts, relax and get ready to have Georgia On My Mind, but in Barcelona.
