Barcelona is even more beautiful during the Mercè festivities. It might be because of the atmosphere, it might be because cleaning efforts are stepped up, or it might be because residents decorate their balconies with the city’s colors.
The Barcelona City Council has been making this possible for several years now: filling the city’s balconies with flags. To this end, various distribution points have been set up throughout Barcelona where they are handed out completely free of charge.
You can pick up the flag at your neighborhood district office, at the Ve de Barcelona bookstore ( Plaza Comercial, 12), or at Porta Cultura, on the ground floor of the Palacio de la Virreina. This initiative, promoted by the Department of Culture, aims to “decorate” the streets and neighborhoods with the colors of the four-barred flag and the Cross of Sant Jordi. The flag can be paired with the Mercè Festival poster, which is also being distributed for free at just three locations in the Catalan capital, though quantities are very limited.
