There’s something almost magical about the bustle of our markets—that interplay of aromas, colors, and conversations that weave together the true pulse of our neighborhoods. That vibrant spirit takes over Plaça de les Glòries from this Friday through Sunday with the highly anticipated edition of the Mercat de Mercats, which celebrates its fifteenth anniversary by bringing together vendors from 11 municipal markets in Barcelona alongside top-tier Catalan producers, artisans, and chefs, from October 16 to 18 at Plaça de les Glòries.
With the goal of promoting local commerce and sustainable food, the fair arrives with a format designed for enjoyment, learning, and savoring. During the event, the venue transforms into a large public showcase that invites visitors not only to fill their baskets with fresh produce but also to immerse themselves in a packed program featuring live cooking demonstrations, intercultural projects, live music, and tastings that span from local traditions to distant lands.
From the stall to the grill
One of the most tempting offerings at this year’s event is the chance to be your own chef. The fair invites visitors to buy fresh produce at the various stalls and take it directly to the free-to-use grills set up on the grounds. There, anyone can grill their purchases and sit down to eat them right away, immersed in the festive atmosphere.
For those who prefer to watch the masters cook, the Aula Gastronómica will once again be the epicenter of the fair. This space will host more than twenty cooking demonstrations (show cookings), talks, tastings, and workshops led by leading figures in today’s restaurant scene, such as Oriol Castro (Disfrutar), Iñaki Aldrey (Atempo), Carlota Claver (La Gormanda), and the duo of Diego Mondragón and Germán Espinosa (Mae).
Conversations in the Kitchen and a Trip to Korea
Food also serves as a bridge and a refuge, as demonstrated by the social and educational initiative “Recipes for Peace,” launched in partnership with Distrito 11. Chef Ada Parellada will share the kitchen with Palestinian chef Husam Dawoud in an event that celebrates gastronomy as a natural space for dialogue and intercultural coexistence.
Meanwhile, this year’s major international highlight comes from Asia. The South Korean province of Jeonbuk is joining the festivities as a special guest, allowing visitors to experience its culture and sample traditional dishes such as bibimbap and songpyeon for 4 euros. The Asian experience will be rounded out with concerts, dance performances, tastings, and craft workshops.
A Toast to the Sun at the Terraza del Lago
To round out the event, the Mercat de Mercats is debuting the Terraza del Lago space this year. Throughout the weekend, this area will offer additional food options accompanied by live concerts and DJ sets.
La Bodegueta will be set up in this same area, a spot for lovers of local drinks. Free tastings will be held here, where visitors can sample a selection of wines, cavas, vermouths, ratafias, and other local products, bringing full circle a festival that celebrates the timeless pleasure of coming together to eat and drink in our city.
