Second day of the World Cup and a packed schedule: this Friday, June 12, there are only two matches on the schedule, both from the first day of the group stage and played on U.S. and Canadian soil, which means they’ll take place in the late afternoon and evening in the U.S. and early morning in Spain.
The main attraction is the night match. The United States, one of the co-hosting teams, kicks off against Paraguay in Group D, in a clash between the host nation’s strength and a Paraguay side returning to the World Cup.
Since it’s the opening matchday, neither team has any prior results: the prize is the first three points and a debut that could set the tone in a group also featuring Australia and Turkey.
The afternoon kicks off with the other host nation. Canada faces Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto, also in its first match in Group B, with the home crowd cheering them on from the start.
Opposite them is a Balkan team returning to the World Cup that doesn’t want to give up ground right from the start. With Switzerland and Qatar lurking in the same group, scoring early seems crucial to securing a spot in the Round of 16.
