The Sagrada Família has dawned this Sunday turned into the scene of protest. Two activists of the Vegetal Future platform have thrown red dyed powder against one of the columns of the main facade of the temple, at 8 am. The action wanted to symbolize, according to the collective, the “complicity of governments” in the forest fires that this summer have devastated thousands of hectares in the peninsula.
In a video posted on the networks of Futuro Vegetal, it can be seen how the two activists access the monumental enclosure and dye red part of the facade while shouting slogans of climate justice. In its publication, the platform points out that “governments are prioritizing irrigating livestock farms with public money instead of protecting people who have lost their homes in the fires”.
The action has been denounced by the Guàrdia Urbana has charged the two people for tarnishing of monument, while the Mossos d’Esquadra have opened proceedings.
At the moment , it is unknown why the protest has been in Catalonia when the great forest fires of this summer have affected, mainly, other areas of the country such as Castilla-La Mancha or Galicia. Some of these fires have, in fact, received aid from Catalan fire departments.
