Sleeping in a hotel is all well and good, but anyone knows the simple charm of a camping site where the days pass long and calmly between getaways to the swimming pool, barbecues and naps. And although camping is usually associated (wrongly, in our opinion), with shabbiness, there are some that stand out, even winning prestigious international design awards.
This is the case of the camping Alfacs of Alcanar, in Tarragona, has been awarded with the FAD of City and Landscape thanks to the wooden design of the bungalows, the outdoor space and the promotion of a new holiday model, which highlights “an exquisite care in the use of vegetation and building materials that connect the set with the surrounding landscape”.v
According to the FAD awards, “the transformation of a large outdoor space that, with a very good reading of the terrain and a series of intelligent strategies, manages to revalue this natural space facing the sea. A central axis organizes the facilities of this sort of small city, creating a structure that facilitates accessibility and social interaction. The streets branching off from it form a network of mini-neighborhoods, composed of prefabricated wooden buildings.”
The project, in charge of the architectural firms Bajet Giramé and JAAS, was born in 2016 with the idea of initiating “an architecturalamorphosis” of the space that would include transformations to improve the complex year after year. Each season closure opens a period of about 4 to 6 months to carry out small improvement works since, according to the architects “there is no single project, but a constantly evolving process”.
how much does it cost to sleep in the design campsite?
The camping Alfacs (Av. Mar, 1, 43530 Alcanar, Tarragona) is in Alcanar, about two hours from Barcelona, very close to the Natural Park of the Ebro Delta and although it has many varieties of accommodation, from plots to apartments, the most attractive spaces are the prefabricated wooden Eco bungalows, many of them with sea views.
In high season the campsite allows a minimum stay of four nights. The Trabucador and Serramar bungalows (this one, with sea views in the first line) are priced between 850 and 900 € for a four-night stay for two people. These bungalows include a kitchen, a terrace with a sofa on a porch and are built with ecological criteria, with solar panels and certified wood.
