One of the most unspoiled and wild beaches in Catalonia, Can Comes, between Sant Pere Pescador and Empuriabrava, has been closed indefinitely. The Parc Natural dels Aiguamolls de l’Empordà has decided to restrict access to a stretch of 2.1 kilometers to protect the fauna and flora that inhabit this area of high ecological value.
Until now, this stretch of beach, which is part of the Les Llaunes integral nature reserve, was closed only between April 1 and June 30, coinciding with the nesting season. Now, however, the closure will be permanent, according to Ivan Bustamante, Parc Natural technician, in a report on 324.
During the 2020 confinement, in the absence of visitors, the return of bird species that had not nested in the area for decades was observed. But with the reopening, many of those species disappeared again. The indefinite closure seeks to avoid these interruptions and to guarantee the reproductive success of the birds and the conservation of the protected plants.
2 kilometers closed, 14 kilometers open
The measure affects only a small part of the 16 kilometers of beaches in the Bay of Roses. In addition, there will be 750 meters of beach at Can Comes, near Empuriabrava, which will remain open from July 1.
The decision has been taken in agreement with the Castelló d’Empúries town council and the campsites in the area, and is supported by a team of informers who will explain the measure to bathers. In case of non-compliance , fines can reach 3,000 euros per person.
