Barcelona has officially approved a new series of changes in its urban nomenclature, among which stands out the officialization of a name that has been popular for years: l’Esvoranc square, the space where the collapse of Carmel took place in 2005. The decision has been validated by the second Ponencia de Nomenclátor of 2025, which met this Monday.
Located between the passage of Calafell and the streets Conca de Tremp and Sigüenza, the square was already known informally by the neighbors as “l’Esvoranc”, in memory of the collapse that marked the recent history of the neighborhood. Now, finally, its name is official.
Feminization of the nomenclature
Another of the most relevant changes is the replacement of the name of the street named after Jordi Girona, a military officer involved in the preparation of the coup d’état of 1936, which was in breach of the Law of Democratic Memory. In its place, the street will be renamed carrer de Bet Figueras, an architect and landscape architect key to the transformation of Barcelona during the 1990s, responsible for projects such as the Parc de Cervantes or the Jardí Botànic.
The new package of decisions also continues with the commitment to feminize the nomenclature. In Sant Martí, the square of Theolongo Bacchio, a character that has been shown to have never existed, will be renamed Gerda Taro square, a pioneer of war photojournalism.
Also incorporated are the names of Felicidad Duque, dressmaker, who will name a new space between Sancho de Avila and Tángery of Maria Antonia Canals, pedagogue, who will have a square in Nou Barris, between Llopis and Pla de les Cireres streets.
Tributes to local and cultural figures
The committee has also agreed to place three new memorial plaques in the city. In carrer de Casanova, 71, in homage to Oriol Bohigas, architect and urban planner key to the modern development of Barcelona, in Barceloneta, to remember Pau Caldés, historic priest of the church of Sant Miquel del Port and in Alt de Sant Pere, 74 bis, where the actor José Sazatornil “Saza” lived.
In addition, in Sarrià – Sant Gervasi, carrer de Sant Liguori will be renamed carrer de Víctor Grífols i Lucas, and in Sant Andreu the creation of the plaza de l’Avenç de l’Sport is approved, in reference to the entity that gave rise to the current UE Sant Andreu.
