You’ve surely heard the phrase“to enjoy the scenery, you have to lean over the cliff” or some variation of it, as it’s probably the best way to describe the destination we’re featuring in this article.
Three hours from Barcelona, on the border between Catalonia and Aragon, there’s a hiking trail unlike any other you’ve ever taken. A path carved directly into the mountain rock at an altitude of over 500 meters, offering views that rival those of the Grand Canyon.
We’re talking about the gorge trail at Congost de Mont-Rebei, a route not suitable for those with a fear of heights, which combines a path carved into the mountain, wooden walkways, a suspension bridge, and unbeatable views of the Noguera Ribagorzana River. There are two possible routes: a shorter one of about 9 kilometers and a longer one that stretches 16 kilometers.
Both routes are of moderate difficulty, though it’s best to come prepared, especially on days with high temperatures or strong sunshine. If the weather cooperates, it’s also an ideal nature reserve for spotting birds like the golden eagle and animals such as the otter.
Congost de Mont-Rebei: Activities, Hours, and Rest Areas
Although it’s a getaway you can do in a single day, the Congost de Mont-Rebei and the Montsec Mountains are a natural enclave that offer many different activities and allow you to enjoy nature in a much more complete experience.
The trail is open and free for anyone who wants to hike it, but it’s recommended to start from one of the two available parking lots. The price is €10 without a reservation or €8 if you book online through the Congost de Mont-Rebei website. Opening hours from March through mid-October are from 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and from October through March, they are from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
If you’re looking for a place to eat or spend the night, the nearest town is Puente de Montaña, 15 minutes away, with accommodations available. Other options include Tremp ( about a 45-minute drive), though it’s much larger and offers more options both in the town itself and along the route; Graus (about 50 minutes away); or Àger ( an hour away).
What’s more, the area offers a wide range of activities to round out your getaway: horseback riding, kayaking, paragliding for the more adventurous, and even a beekeeping experience that includes a visit to the hive and a honey tasting.
