There is something deeply comforting about the moment when the lights in a theater go out, the murmur of voices fades away, and the big screen comes to life. That dark sanctuary, which allows us to live a thousand lives in a single afternoon, is about to completely transform the experience. Cinemes Girona has announced a major visual and audio renovation of its facilities ahead of this summer, marking the most ambitious technological investment the venue has undertaken since it opened its doors in 2010.
To accompany this transformation—which includes a final farewell to the old projection lamps and the arrival of immersive sound—the theater has launched its now-classic annual membership campaign. Throughout July 2026, moviegoers have the opportunity to purchase a pass that offers a true flat rate Monday through Thursday, guaranteeing a full year of seats, new releases, and popcorn for a one-time fee.
Saying Goodbye to the Old Light Bulbs and Making the Leap to Immersive Sound
This summer marks a turning point in the venue’s projection quality. The old equipment, which ran on xenon lamps, has its days numbered as it gives way to new, state-of-the-art laser projectors in each of the venue’s three theaters. Additionally, work will begin this July in Theater 3 to install the Dolby Atmos system, an audio architecture designed to envelop the viewer and place them acoustically at the exact center of the film.
The venue’s upgrade comes hand in hand with its coveted annual passes— the subscription that allows you to go to the movies as many times as you like from Monday through Thursday. Those who choose to attend on the weekend—Friday, Saturday, and Sunday—will only need to pay a small surcharge of 2 euros per screening.
Tickets are available from July 6 through July 31. They are priced at a promotional rate of 100 euros if purchased directly at the box office, or 95 euros if bought through the TRESC website. Once July ends, the price will return to its regular rate of 199 euros.
The ranking of the biggest movie buffs
To understand just how much you can get out of this flat-rate plan, just take a look at the spectacular numbers from last season. The undisputed champion was Dolores, a moviegoer who managed to watch 130 feature films in a single year. Rounding out the top three are two subscribers both named Jordi, with 125 and 116 films under their belts, respectively.
In fact, the frequency of attendance by its most loyal patrons demonstrates the value of the membership: the twenty most frequent attendees have averaged about 90 films over the year, the top fifty have reached 71, and the large group of the hundred most active members averages 57.7 viewings.
Over the past few months, the films that have drawn the largest crowds have been *Romería*, directed by Carla Simón; *Father Mother Sister Brother*, by filmmaker Jim Jarmusch; and *Amarga Navidad*, directed by Pedro Almodóvar.
Far from slowing down, the 2026–27 season promises to be just as powerful. The lineup for the coming months is already gearing up and promises to continue drawing in locals with highly anticipated films such as *La bola negra*, directed by Los Javis, and *Club Kid*, directed by Jordan Firstman.
