Barcelona is not only inspiration; it is also the perfect set. The city of Barcelona is once again the absolute protagonist of a crime thriller that promises tension and many emblematic locations. We are talking about City of Shadows, a new series that premieres this Friday on Netflix and adapts the first novel in the acclaimed saga of Inspector Milo Malart.
The starting point could not be more shocking or Barcelona: the plot kicks off with the discovery of a charred body on the facade of La Pedrera, Gaudí’s masterpiece on Passeig de Gràcia. This macabre event forces Inspector Milo Malart, played by Isak Férriz (whom you may remember for his role in Fira: The Darkest Light), to return to service in the Mossos d’Esquadra, from where he had been suspended for insubordination.
Together with sub-inspector Rebeca Garrido, played by actress Verónica Échegui (who sadly passed away last August, which adds a layer of emotion to the premiere), Malart delves into the shadows of the City of Barcelona to unravel the mystery. The film is directed by Jorge Torregrossa, known for his work in successful series such as Fariña and Élite.
From the Sagrada Familia to Colònia Güell: A tour of Catalan heritage.

Filming, which took place at the end of last year, has transformed some of the most photographed corners of Barcelona into scenes of intrigue. Beyond the striking Casa Milà (La Pedrera), other modernist jewels will parade across the screen.
According to sources close to the production company, iconic exteriors such as the foot of the Sagrada Família or Park Güell have been used. In some cases, interior scenes have been recreated for greater fidelity to the atmosphere of the novel, although the authenticity of the exteriors is undeniable.
But the series is not limited to the cap i casal. The filming has expanded its scope to other locations with a strong Catalan flavor, such as Gavà or the historic Colònia Güell, a textile and residential complex from the modernist period that also bears the stamp of the genius of Reus, Antoni Gaudí. In this way, City of Shadows not only offers a thrilling thriller, but also a fascinating tour of the architectural heritage of the province.
