What awaits us in EVEREST: The First Ascent
EVEREST: The First Ascent takes us back to 1953, the year Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first to reach the summit of Everest. We’ll accompany them from the very first day of the expedition on an unprecedented journey experienced firsthand thanks to virtual reality.
A pair of goggles with a built-in sound system is all we’ll need for this adventure, which begins with a train ride to Kathmandu, leading us on to the base camps, the breathtaking snow-capped mountains of the Himalayas, and even a mystical visit to Tengboche Monastery (located at an altitude of 3,867 meters). Throughout all these settings, Sherpa Tenzing Norgay will serve as narrator and experienced guide, and—alongside Edmund Hillary—he’ll be our companion until we reach the summit of Everest, at no less than 8,848 meters above sea level.
Just like the original journey, the path to the summit won’t be easy: during our virtual expedition, we’ll experience harsh weather conditions, overcome obstacles in hostile terrain, and face other challenges, such as dangerous altitude sickness or the need to ration oxygen tanks. That said, the effort will be well worth it when we finally get to see some of the most beautiful landscapes on the planet.
In EVEREST: The First Ascent, we’ll meet other historical figures from the 1953 expedition, such as its leader, John Hunt, and teammates who came very close to achieving glory—because neither Hillary nor Tenzing were the first choice to reach the summit.
This immersive journey, lasting about 35 minutes, features highly realistic graphics, a meticulously crafted soundscape, and the option to choose between Spanish and English narration. The entire project was developed with scientific and expert guidance—including input from Lapka Sherpa Gelgen, a Sherpa guide who has reached the summit of Everest seven times—to ensure historical, cultural, and human accuracy.
EVEREST: The First Ascent joins the ECLIPSO Barcelona family, a venue that already hosts other immersive experiences such as the space odyssey *Space Explorers: The ISS Experience*, set inside the International Space Station. Its blend of fun and education, along with its excellent location (you can spend the day before or after at the shopping center that houses it, either shopping or dining), makes it perfect for all audiences, whether groups of friends or families. Keep in mind, however, that due to the nature of the experience, it is recommended for children ages 8 and up (who must always be accompanied by an adult).
