After two years away from its original location, the Fira Mercat de Mercats returns to Plaça de les Glòries from 17 to 19 October. The fourteenth edition of this great festival of Barcelona’s markets and gastronomy celebrates in style: with fresh produce, tapas, music, showcookings and even a new space for wine, olive oil and beer tastings.
For three days, Glòries will become the epicenter of local produce and the city’s gastronomic culture, with the participation of eleven municipal markets offering their best specialties.
There will be everything: fruit and vegetables, sausages, fish, meat, homemade bread and sweets, as well as a food court where different restaurants in the city will serve tapas for 4 and 6 euros. You can also opt for a tasting menu fair (16 €) or a family menu (40 €).
Haute cuisine, proximity and new spaces
The event will feature Michelin Star chefs such as Albert Raurich (Dos Palillos), David Andrés (Via Veneto) and Matsuhisa Hideki (Koy Shunka), as well as the Mercats de Forquilla cycle with chef Carles Gaig (Petit Comitè) and a talk on inclusive gastronomy with Jordi Esteve (Nectari).
One of the great novelties is La Bodegueta, a new tasting space where you can taste oils, beers, cavas and Catalan liqueurs. The Cooperatives Agràries de Catalunya space is also premiering, with oil producers from all over the region (Vallbona de les Monges, Riudecanyes, La Palma d’Ebre, among others).
10 markets together in one (and an antiques market).
The soul of the event, as always, are the markets of Barcelona. This year La Boqueria, el Ninot, Santa Caterina, Sarrià, Sant Gervasi, Tres Torres, Provençals, Felip II, Galvany and La Mercè are participating, with emblematic stops such as Soley, Ca la Rat or Waoo Artisan Bakery.
And there will not only be fresh produce: the Mercat dels Encants joins the celebration with a tribute to the Beatles concert in Barcelona, which celebrates its 60th anniversary. There will be an exhibition, a tribute concert and a talk by the expert Miguel J. Navarro.
Buying and cooking your own food
In addition to buying and tasting, visitors will be able to cook what they buy on the spot, thanks to a new space with microwaves and barbecues. You buy your food, and you can prepare it right there.
And how could it be otherwise, the fair will also feature live music, showcookings and activities for all ages.
The official opening will be on Friday October 17 at 17:30 h, with the presence of the deputy mayor Raquel Gil and the opening speech by journalist Òscar Dalmau.
