Barcelona is getting ready for its most beautiful day of the year, the one when the streets smell of flower petals and fresh ink. But beyond dodging the crowds on the Ramblas, there’s a sort of temporary “VIP club” in the city: the one for Jordis, Jordinas, and their variations. If you’re lucky enough to bear the name of the knight who slew the dragon, this April 23rd the city becomes a little more yours, allowing you to rediscover iconic spots without breaking the bank.
It’s one of those traditions that sometimes goes unnoticed amid all the roses, but it’s a golden opportunity to play tourist in your own backyard. We often walk past the great monuments with that mix of pride and laziness, thinking, “We’ll go in another day,” but when free admission is on the table, the whole perspective changes.
Those named Jordi and Jordin get free entry to the Columbus Monument…
The Mirador de Colón, that giant who has watched over the end of the Ramblas since 1888, is much more than just a statue for cruise ship passengers to take photos with. Inside, it hides an elevator that takes you up 60 meters to offer one of the most comprehensive panoramic views of the Barcelona coastline. This Sant Jordi, the monument opens its doors wide to anyone who can prove their name matches that of the patron saint.
No prior reservation or complicated paperwork is required; just show up between 10:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. and present your ID to get in for free. Plus, if you go with someone who isn’t as lucky as you are, that person can join you for just half the regular admission price. It’s the perfect plan to experience the heartbeat of Port Vell on a festive day before getting lost in the Gothic Quarter.
…and also the Sagrada Familia viewpoint…
But the city’s generosity doesn’t stop at the water’s edge. The Sagrada Família, the temple that never stops growing, is also joining the celebration with an event that blends tradition with digital art. All the Jordis and Jordinas around the world—and this includes variations like George, Gorka, or Jordi in any language—can enter for free with a guest all day on the 23rd. That said, planning is key here, as you must make a reservation in advance through their official website to secure a spot, since capacity fills up in a matter of minutes.
For those who want to take it a step further, the Basilica has organized something even more special on the eve of the big day. On the night of April 22, a small group of lucky visitors will be able to enjoy “Llum primigènia,” an audiovisual installation that projects digital art onto Gaudí’s architecture, creating a visual dialogue with Subirachs’ famous sculpture of Sant Jordi. It’s a way to experience the basilica away from the daytime hustle and bustle, where light and silence tell their own story of the legend.
… and 2-for-1 at the Glòries viewpoint
If ancient stone isn’t your thing but avant-garde structures are, the Torre Glòries has also decided to join in the tribute to the day’s protagonists. In this case, Jean Nouvel’s iconic building is offering a deal that extends beyond April 23: a 2-for-1 promotion on tickets for all Jordis, Jorges, Georginas, and other variations, valid through April 27.
All you have to do is go to the ticket booths and show your name to go up 125 meters and enjoy a 360-degree view of the city. The ticket not only lets you observe the grid of the Eixample from the clouds, but also includes access to the Hipermirador Barcelona, a space on the -1 level that analyzes the city as a living organism through real-time data. It’s the perfect excuse to see how Barcelona’s urban sprawl extends as far as the eye can see.
