Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced this morning the dissolution of the Spanish Parliament and the calling of early general elections for November 29.
In light of this situation, various deadlines and procedures are now in effect that affect both the political parties that will field candidates and citizens interested in applying for absentee ballots.
The process formally begins tomorrow, Tuesday, October 6, with the publication of the decree calling for the election in the Official State Gazette (BOE), and the application period for voting by mail will open that same day. Applications may be submitted at post offices or online, provided the applicant has an electronic certificate or an electronic ID card and the AutoFirma application.
The deadline will close on Thursday, November 19, the last day to apply for a mail-in ballot. The Electoral Census Office will begin sending the necessary documentation to applicants starting November 9. The last day to cast a mail-in ballot will be Wednesday, November 25.
Here are the dates you need to mark on your calendar if you cannot vote in person or have other plans for that day:
- Tuesday, October 6: Start of the application period for absentee voting.
- Thursday, November 19: last day to apply for a mail-in ballot.
- Wednesday, November 25: Last day to vote by mail.
