The city has officially opened the doors to the Geological Garden, a 1,830-square-meter outdoor museum located on Menéndez y Pelayo Street. Situated in the Maternitat i Sant Ramon neighborhood, this new educational facility, affiliated with the UB’s Faculty of Earth Sciences, offers a journey through geology and the sciences of the planet through the display of natural materials and informational elements.
The new museum is located across from the University of Barcelona’s (UB) Faculty of Earth Sciences, specifically on the stretch between Martí i Franquès Street and Joan XXIII Avenue. The uniqueness of this project lies in the use of public space as an extension of teaching and research areas, bringing academic knowledge outside the university campus to make it more accessible to the public.
Four thematic areas for learning
The design of the Geological Garden is organized into four distinct sections that allow visitors to delve deeper into specific concepts of Earth sciences:
- Geological Time: A Journey Through the Earth’s Chronology.
- The Earth: General information about the composition of our planet.
- The Geological Wall: An installation featuring exhibits and natural materials.
- Applications and Processes: A section dedicated to the practical aspects of geology.
Each section combines real exhibition pieces with informational panels designed to facilitate understanding of natural processes.
The construction work, managed by the municipal company BIMSA, had a budget of 1.2 million euros. The project was funded by European Next Generation funds, intended for the creation of spaces that promote scientific outreach and the improvement of the urban environment.
