The Barcelona Metropolitan Area Council (AMB) has given initial approval to the 2025-2030 Urban Mobility Plan. This new strategy bans vehicles with a B environmental sticker (yellow sticker) from Low Emission Zones (LEZs) starting in 2028, with the ultimate goal of phasing out combustion engines by 2030.
The metropolitan strategy not only tightens restrictions but also seeks to expand their geographic scope. The plan calls for extending the mandatory application of LEZs to municipalities that were previously excluded, specifically mentioning Sant Andreu de la Barca and Martorell. In this way, the regulatory framework will serve as a basis for the 36 municipalities that make up the metropolitan authority to review their own mobility plans.
The End of Combustion Engines
The timeline set by the AMB establishes 2030 as the deadline for the gradual phase-out of all combustion-engine vehicles in the region. This measure is part of a phased plan that aims to transform urban mobility in the Barcelona area toward more sustainable and less polluting models over the next five years.
The proposal has been approved with broad support from the political parties represented on the Council. The plan received the favorable vote of most parties, with the exception of the PP, which chose to abstain, and Vox, which voted against the initiative.
