The intense heat wave that has affected Catalonia and Barcelona this week will give way from this Friday, August 2 to a generalized episode of storms and rain in the region. Since Friday afternoon, the Civil Protection service has activated the Inuncat plan due to the risk of localized flooding in areas of Catalonia due to heavy rains.
The storms, which will be especially intense between the afternoon and evening, will mainly affect the inland and northern regions of Catalonia, while in Barcelona they are expected to be weaker towards the end of the afternoon.
Inception of these storms will take place in the Pyrenees, where instability will be noticeable from this midday and progressively towards the south of Catalonia.
Meteocat forecasts indicate that rainfall could exceed 20 liters per square meter in 30 minutes in many areas of Catalonia, with special incidence in the Pyrenees, Pre-Pyrenees, Central Catalonia and Terra Alta. In regions such as Bages, Berguedà, Lluçanès and Ripollès, rainfall could exceed 40 liters per square meter in the same period of time.
In Barcelona, the probability of accumulating more than 20 liters per square meter in 30 minutes is low, less than 30%, and is expected to occur between 8 p.m. Friday and 2 a.m. Saturday.
The storm and rainfall warning will remain in effect until Saturday, August 3. To consult all the detailed information in real time, we recommend visiting Meteocat the official meteorological service of the Generalitat de Catalunya.
