Christmas in Barcelona is much more than the massive lighting of Passeig de Gràcia. It is a declaration of intentions that, year after year, turns the city into a laboratory of digital art and light. And the political heart of the city, Plaza Sant Jaume, is once again the epicenter of this Christmas vanguard.
From November 22 to January 5, the facades of the City Hall and the Generalitat de Catalunya will merge into a single work of light art: ‘Simfonia d’Estels’ (Symphony of Stars). A proposal that, mind you, is not a mapping to use. The intention of the City Council is to offer a visual and slow “embrace”, which invites more to contemplation than to the fleeting spectacle.
The Barcelona studio of Xavi Bové is the architect of this “silent symphony”, which has set out to reinterpret the Christmas imaginary through light. The result? A living image where 25 golden stars (in allusion to the Advent calendar) are gradually lit and synchronized, creating a harmonious dialogue with the architecture of the square.
Klimt’s gold and more than 50 million pixels for a signature Christmas.

Bové’s inspiration is not accidental. The glow of the installation evokes the gilding of Gustav Klimt’s paintings and the delicacy of the gold leaf on the altarpieces, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
To achieve this couture lighting effect, the buildings have been dressed in a second skin projected with 240,000 lumens and an unprecedented resolution of more than 50 million pixels. A technical display designed to highlight every architectural detail. The projection schedule will start at 6:30 p.m. every day, with special extensions on weekends, eves and, of course, on key nights such as Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Eve and Epiphany.
Barcelona shines brighter than ever: 126 kilometers of light and a budget of 3.8 million
The ambitious proposal for Plaza Sant Jaume is just one piece in the renewed lighting tapestry of the city. Under the slogan ‘Barcelona Llums de Nadal’, the City Council consolidates its commitment to signature design and decentralized lighting.
According to the information provided, this year the city will allocate a budget of more than 3.8 million euros to its Christmas lighting, which translates into 126 kilometers of illuminated streets, a significant increase over previous years.
