This Monday, Catalonia faces a movie-like scenario that, fortunately, is just a drill. A large-scale chemical hazard drill will set off alarms for nearly one million people throughout the region. But the big question many are asking is: Will the sirens go off in my neighborhood or municipality?
To clear up any doubts, Civil Protection has provided the exact locations where these 119 sirens will be activated, strategically distributed throughout areas with the highest concentration of industry and risk. Here is a breakdown by district of the municipalities that will hear the unmistakable warning beep:
Barcelona: The province of Barcelona accounts for the bulk of the alerts, covering both the metropolitan area and several key locations in Vallès and Baix Llobregat. The sirens will sound in: Abrera, Barcelona (specifically in the Zona Franca and the Port), Castellbisbal, Cornellà de Llobregat, Esparreguera, Granollers, Gualba, l’Hospitalet de Llobregat, Lliçà de Vall, Martorell, Montornès del Vallès, Olesa de Montserrat, Parets del Vallès, Polinyà, El Prat de Llobregat, Sant Andreu de la Barca, Sant Boi de Llobregat, Sant Celoni, Sant Feliu de Llobregat, Sant Joan Despí, Santa Coloma de Cervelló, Santa Perpètua de Mogoda, Terrassa, and Viladecans.
Tarragona: Southern Europe’s most important petrochemical hub could not be left out. In the Camp de Tarragona region, the drill will be heard in: Constantí, Els Garidells, El Morell, Els Pallaresos, Perafort, La Pobla de Mafumet, Reus, Tarragona (the capital), Vilallonga del Camp, Vila-seca, Salou, and La Canonja.
Girona: In the Girona region, the alert will be activated in key industrial areas: Celrà, Fogars de la Selva, Massanes, and Riells i Viabrea.
Central Catalonia: In the heart of Catalonia, the sirens will test response capabilities in: Castellgalí, Igualada, Puig-reig, and Sant Vicenç de Castellet.
Terres de l’Ebre and Alt Pirineu i Aran: Finally, the deployment will also extend to the south and the far north. In the Terres de l’Ebre, the sirens will sound in Flix and Tortosa (specifically in the town of Campredó). Meanwhile, in the Alt Pirineu i Aran, the alert will be heard in the municipality of Les.
