Barcelona has a very special relationship with cuisine and gastronomy. There are quite a few bars and restaurants in the city that are famous for being much more than just “a place to grab a bite” and for preserving part of Barcelona’s history and culture. The Mundial Bar is a great example of how the city’s essence blends with a single establishment until it becomes an iconic destination.
Such fame isn’t built overnight; the Mundial Bar is celebrating its 101st anniversary, and to mark the occasion, it’s offering a three-course meal with dessert for €19.25 in homage to the year it opened, 1925. This special will be available from September 10 through 22 and by reservation only.
The 1925 Menu features clams in green sauce, a Cal Rovira tomato salad, and sautéed chickpeas with spinach, cod, and black sausage; plus a homemade flan for dessert. Bread is included in the price, just like in the bars of yesteryear.
The connection between the Mundial Bar and boxing is well known. Shortly after it opened, the bar became a gathering place for boxing fans throughout much of the 20th century, and in this new era, the bar has sought to pay tribute to that legacy in ways that go beyond its décor and the paintings featuring boxing legends.
After the pandemic, in 2021, the iconic venue on Plaça de Sant Agustí Vell closed, but four years later, Grup Confiteria revived the restaurant under the slogan“Segundo Asalto”(SecondRound)—an initiative that honors its past through cuisine to recapture the essence of a popular neighborhood bar.
