The transition from summer heat to extreme rainfall in a matter of days—or even hours—is becoming increasingly common in Catalonia and along the entire Mediterranean coast. The Catalan Meteorological Service ( Meteocat) and Civil Protection have activated an orange alert and the Inuncat plan due to heavy rains and severe storms along the entire Catalan coastline and coastal plain.
In the provinces of Barcelona and Tarragona, the alert is in effect today, Monday, September 28, from 8:00 p. m. until tomorrow, Tuesday, September 29, at 3:00 p.m. In Girona, the extreme risk begins tonight and will last until Tuesday afternoon, tentatively until 6:00 p.m.
According to meteorological services, rainfall could exceed 40 liters per square meter in half an hour and reach up to 150 liters per square meter in some areas, such as the Collserola region. However, the risk is not limited to heavy rainfall and storms; it also includes possible hailstorms and extreme winds caused by the collision of large masses of cold air.
Emergency teams urge the public to drive with caution, avoid any unnecessary travel, and stay away from flood-prone or underground areas. The possibility of issuing an ES-Alert or restricting activities has not been ruled out, depending on how the situation develops.
Six rainy days to bid farewell to summer
Catalonia is bracing for a day of unstable weather with a 100% chance of rain tomorrow in the province of Barcelona and a week in which rain is forecast every day through next Saturday, October 3.
The arrival of these storms will cause a sharp drop in temperatures which , although it will ease slightly on Wednesday, will mark the end of the high temperatures we’ve experienced throughout the summer months.
