Summer nights in Barcelona always have a special feel to them, a gentle breeze that invites people to leave their apartments and seek refuge outdoors when the sun takes a break. This year, that neighborhood ritual once again finds its perfect excuse in the screens that will light up as night falls, transforming the courtyards and surroundings of community centers into open-air movie theaters under the stars. This is a new edition of the Pantalla Barcelona film series , an initiative of the Cultural District that aims to bring local culture to every corner of the city.
The event officially kicks off on June 25 and will run through July 23, offering a completely free lineup of screenings at various civic centers and cultural spaces throughout Barcelona’s districts. Throughout these weeks, audiences will be able to enjoy outdoor screenings that will generally begin at 9:30 p.m. or 10:00 p.m., making summer nights the ideal setting for social gatherings and the art of cinema.
A lineup with its own unique flair and a diversity of genres
This summer’s film lineup stands out for its variety, ranging from intense dramas to comedies suitable for the whole family. Among the scheduled titles is *Molt lluny*, directed by Gerard Oms, a drama in Catalan suitable for all audiences, as well as *Los Tortuga*, a film by Belén Funes that combines Spanish with other languages and is recommended for ages 7 and up.
The dramatic lineup is complemented by plays such as *Un sol radiant*, by Mònica Cambra and Ariadna Fortuny, and *Un lugar común*, directed by Celia Giraldo—the latter aimed at audiences 12 and older. For those looking for something lighter, comedy will be represented by productions such as *Norberta*, by Sonia Escolano and Belén López Albert, and *La furgo*, a comedy-drama by Eloy Calvo.
Rounding out the lineup are the feature film *L’àvia i el foraster*, directed by Sergi Miralles, and the short films *Wolfgang*, by Javier Ruiz Caldera, and *Una quinta portuguesa*, by Avelina Prat. It’s worth noting the emphasis on accessibility in this edition, as the vast majority of the films feature subtitles and an audio description service available to attendees.
