The future of a Plaza Espanya without buses and with a subway intercity bus station, is already beginning to be glimpsed. And although it is still far away, yesterday took a giant step with the tender of the preliminary and constructive study by the Government, with a budget of 1.8 million euros, of the future subway bus station of Plaça Espanya.
The study tender has launched a project that seeks to solve the mobility problems in the area due to the high concentration of intercity transport, with important modifications in the area such as the elimination of the current Sants bus station as part of the redevelopment plan.
The construction of this subway station is part of a broader effort to improve the Mediterranean Corridor and facilitate both passenger and freight transport, along with other projects for the area such as the extension of the Railway.
Where will the Plaça Espanya subway station be?
The station will face the challenge of integrating into an environment already saturated by existing infrastructure, such as Metro lines L1 and L3, the Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) station and the road tunnel that crosses the square.
The project contemplates several alternatives for its location and design, all of them directly connected to the Metro and FGC. The options range from occupying only a part of the square adjacent to Avinguda Maria Cristina to extending towards this avenue, with configurations ranging from 13 to 31 docks.
When will it be ready?
The study tender is a very initial step of the project, something like the “permission” to start analyzing the operation and proposing viable projects. For this reason, the project does not yet have an executive plan or a defined timetable.
According to Barcelona Regional’s 2022 documents, three possible alternatives are being evaluated for its final design.
