After the passage of several storms, Catalonia’s reservoirs have experienced a moderate but positive recovery and currently stand at 47.6% of their total capacity, according to the latest data updated to 20 March 2025 by the Catalan Water Agency.
In global terms, all the reservoirs of the internal basins of Catalonia have improved with respect to the 14.38% of a year ago, but still far from the average values of the last five and ten years, located at 54.9% and 64.5%, respectively.
How were the reservoirs in recent years?
The comparison with the data of a year ago in the reservoirs of greater capacity, those of the Confederació Hidrogràfica de l’Ebre with capacity greater than 5 hm3 is positive. In 2024 they were at 44% of their average capacity, a figure that today is 20 points higher at 65%.
A trend that could alleviate Catalonia for next summer. Recall that in 2024, the scarcity of rainfall and high temperatures led Catalonia to decree a drought situation in several areas, imposing restrictions on water consumption for various uses. Reservoir reserves reached alarming lows, below 16%.
The latest rains leave the reservoirs at 2022 levels, when reserves had already begun to fall (remember that in 2021 they were still above 90%).
And although the outlook is more reassuring, for the moment the Generalitat rules out relaxing water limitations.
How much water do we use in a day in Catalonia?
In a normal water situation, some 7,500,000 people consume 1 hm3 per day, as detailed by the Catalan Water Agency on its website. Hence the importance of critical levels of reservoirs such as Riudecanyes, with 1.31 hm3 at present, and the good data presented by others such as Susqueda (Osor) with 95 hm3.
Recent rains have meant a respite for water supply, but experts warn that full recovery requires a prolonged period of sustained rainfall.
