The 2026 Holy Week celebrations will bring significant changes to the operations of supermarkets in the Catalan capital. The holidays on Good Friday and Easter Monday will mark the calendar with most large retail stores ceasing operations, forcing residents to stock up on basic supplies in advance.
Mercadona, Alcampo, Aldi, Lidl, Hipercor, and Bonpreu Esclat have announced a complete closure on Good Friday, Easter Sunday, and Easter Monday. These companies will operate as usual on Saturday to facilitate shopping before the second consecutive holiday of the week.
Exceptions and partial openings
The sector offers some alternatives for those who need to make last-minute purchases on holidays:
- Sunday: Opening hours will vary widely. Some stores will remain open, especially in tourist areas, while others will close. Many stores will operate on a reduced schedule from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
- Consum: The Valencian chain will close its main stores on public holidays. However, Consum Charter stores will offer special hours on Good Friday and Easter Monday, from 9:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
- Ametller Origen: Closed Friday and Monday, but will be open to customers on Sunday morning (from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.).
- BonÀrea: Will maintain service on holidays, although customer service will be limited to the morning hours (9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.) at various locations.
- Caprabo: Although the general rule will be closure, stores located in central areas of Barcelona will remain open every day.
Commercial activity throughout the city will return to full normalcy next Tuesday, when all establishments will resume their usual opening and closing hours. It is recommended to check each retailer’s official website to confirm the status of specific stores.
