There are celestial phenomena that seem to make time stand still—moments when the Barcelona sky reminds us just how small we are. On August 12, 2026, Catalonia will experience a total solar eclipse, a truly historic event that hasn’t been seen in our skies since way back in 1905.
Although the southern parts of the region promise to be the ideal spot for viewing, the city has no intention of missing out on the spectacle. Montjuïc Castle has decided to take advantage of its prime location and will open its doors with the event “Experience the Solar Eclipse at the Castle,” inviting residents to enjoy the phenomenon from one of the best vantage points in the Catalan capital.
The most eagerly awaited minute and a half
The astronomical evening within the walled enclosure will run from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., with the last admission slot at 9:00 p.m. According to the scheduled timeline, the eclipse will begin to appear at 7:35 p.m., but the main event will come a little later.
Around 8:29 p.m., totality will be reached—a climax of darkness in the midst of dusk that will last approximately one and a half minutes—before the phenomenon finally ends at 9:00 p.m.
Culture Before the Big Blackout
The event isn’t just about looking up at the sky.Those who arrive early will have the opportunity to stroll through the grounds and visit the castle’s various exhibitions, which will remain open to the public until 8:00 p.m.
To secure a spot at the fortress, advance reservations are required. General admission costs 12 euros, while children under 16 can enter the grounds completely free of charge.
