There are August afternoons when the heat makes you seek out the shade, but the afternoon of the 12th will bring us a different kind of darkness—immense and awe-inspiring. A total solar eclipse will cross the Catalan sky, transforming the regions of Camp de Tarragona, Terres de l’Ebre, and Ponent into a vast open-air auditorium from which to watch as daylight suddenly fades for a few magical minutes. It will be a historic moment that draws thousands of people eager to look up toward the same spot.
In anticipation of the flood of onlookers who will take to the roads that afternoon, a logistics plan has been designed to ensure the experience doesn’t end in an endless traffic jam. To protect the natural environment and ensure everyone’s comfort, spacious and safe viewing areas have been set up; tens of thousands of protective glasses will be distributed; and an army of 700 officers will ensure that the only surprise of the day is the one the sky has in store for us.
The 18 spots to look up
To prevent people from getting lost on dirt roads or endangering the forests, eighteen specific locations have been selected that lie precisely within the path of totality of the eclipse. These are spacious sites with parking and good views, designed to safely accommodate large crowds. Here are the official viewing spots, their capacity limits, and the exact duration of total darkness at each one:
In the Terres de l’Ebre:
- Alcanar (Plaça de bous): Can accommodate 1,025 people and 680 cars. The darkness will last 1 minute and 37 seconds.
- Amposta (l’Oriola Industrial Park): Space for 4,400 people and 2,000 vehicles. Totality: 1 minute and 33 seconds.
- Camarles (Pla de Camarles): Capacity for 3,000 people and 1,750 cars. Totality: 1 minute and 31 seconds.
- Gandesa (La Plana Industrial Park): Capacity for 2,300 people and 1,100 cars. Totality: 1 minute and 24 seconds.
- L’Aldea (Can Gironès): One of the largest viewing sites, with capacity for 4,500 people and 3,300 vehicles. Totality: 1 minute and 32 seconds.
- L’Ametlla de Mar (Municipal Soccer Field): Capacity for 1,250 people and 500 cars. Totality: 1 minute and 25 seconds.
- Móra la Nova (Carrer Tortosa): Capacity for 3,800 people and 1,500 cars. Totality: 1 minute and 17 seconds.
- Santa Bàrbara (Carretera de la Galera / Sports Area): Capacity for 1,100 people and 790 vehicles. Totality: 1 minute and 34 seconds.
In the Camp de Tarragona:
- Altafulla (Font del Mirador): A more intimate spot for 600 people and 240 cars. Totality: 53 seconds.
- Cambrils (Agricultural Cooperative): Capacity for 1,800 people and 1,080 cars.
- Constantí (Joan Miró Street): Space for 1,600 people and 680 vehicles.
- Montbrió del Camp (Les Palomeres / Granja Gira-Sol): Capacity for 2,400 people and 670 cars. Totality: 1 minute and 7 seconds.
- Reus (Barri Immaculada): Capacity for 2,450 people and 1,740 vehicles. Totality: 1 minute and 1 second.
- Tarragona (L’Anella Mediterrànea): A large venue where the “daytime night” will last exactly 1 minute.
- Torredembarra (Roques Planes Industrial Park): Capacity for 1,300 people and 1,000 cars. Totality: 52 seconds.
- Valls (Carrer Fuster, Industrial Park): Ample capacity for 4,100 people and 1,900 vehicles. Totality: 39 seconds.
In Ponent:
- Les Borges Blanques (Sports Complex): Space for 2,500 people and 1,400 cars. Totality: 23 seconds.
- Lleida (Magraners): Capacity for 4,300 people and 1,950 vehicles. Totality: 25 seconds.
In addition to these locations, popular towns such as l’Ampolla, Deltebre, Sant Jaume d’Enveja, la Ràpita, Alforja, and Vilanova de Prades will have police checkpoints at their entrances, directing visitors to park-and-ride facilities from which they can walk to the viewing sites.
How to Avoid Traffic Jams
On that day, improvising your route isn’t a good idea. If you’re heading toward Ponent, the best options are the C-25 and the A-2. To get to Lleida, Les Borges Blanques, Valls, or Prades, take the AP-2. And if you’re traveling between Camp de Tarragona and the Ebre, take the A-7 or the N-340.
Heavy traffic is expected on major roads such as the A-27, N-240, T-11, and N-420. To ease congestion, truck traffic will be restricted from 2:00 p.m. until midnight. They will not be allowed to travel south on the AP-7 (between Martorell and Ulldecona) or on the N-340 (from Vilafranca to Ulldecona). Those traveling north on that same stretch will only be allowed to use the right lane, without passing, and at a maximum speed of 80 km/h.
Protect Your Eyes and Keep the Forests Clean
Looking directly at the sun is extremely dangerous and can cause irreversible damage. Forget the usual tricks: no X-rays, no tinted glass, and no regular sunglasses. Only certified glasses (ISO 12312-2) or telescopes with the proper filter will work. To make it easy for you, up to 150,000 certified pairs of glasses will be distributed for free at official distribution points.
The security operation includes more than 700 officers from the Mossos d’Esquadra, aerial patrols with helicopters and drones, and additional staff for the 112 emergency hotline, which will be particularly busy between 4:00 p.m. and midnight.
Finally, a bit of common sense: August is synonymous with fire risk. Do not start fires, do not smoke in the woods, do not park your car on dry grass, take your trash with you, and keep your dog on a leash. If Rural Rangers block access to any forested area, listen to them. The sky is giving us this spectacle; let’s take care of the earth.
