The Llobregat Delta, one of the most important natural areas in Catalonia for bird watching, is perhaps also one of the most unknown. Yes, that green thing you see from the plane around the airport when you take off from the city is actually a natural park at the gates of Barcelona that is home to some unique species.
Surely you knew the flamingos of the Ebro delta or dels aiguamolls de l’Empordà, but perhaps you didn’t know that these flamingos also pass through Barcelona on their migratory route and stop in this delta, just outside the city. For this reason, El Prat has just opened a specialized viewpoint for flamingo watching at the entrance to the Natural Spaces of Llobregat that allows you to go by subway.
How to get to the Delta flamingo viewpoint?
The viewpoint is located in a privileged location, where the flamingos find waters with the ideal conditions of salinity and turbidity to feed. Although it may not seem so, the Llobregat Delta has become a key stop for flamingos during their migratory routes around the Mediterranean, connecting wetlands such as the Ebro Delta or the French Camargue. Their migrations are not limited to a single season, allowing them to be observed almost all year round. Their flocks are more frequent in autumn, winter and at certain times of the spring.
The Delta has more than 360 recorded species of birds, and they are gregarious animals that need large groups to establish themselves as a colony, which adds spectacularity to their appearances in this area.
It can be reached by metro from the center of Barcelona by getting off at the Les Moreres stop on the L9S. From there, it is a 30-minute walk through the fields to the viewpoint. Another way to get there is to take the bus X2 in Plaça Espanya, which leaves us in the area or the Rodalies to El Prat to walk to the viewpoint.
This opening comes, by the way, in the midst of controversy over the expansion of the airport and the growth of the equipment, with which it is not known what will be done.
