Although today, when we think of Halloween, we picture terrifying costumes and the typical “trick-or-treating” from American movies, the holiday dates back many centuries before the United States even existed, and in Catalonia we’ve had our own traditions long before movies made us dream of Freddy Krueger or Jigsaw.
In Barcelona, neighborhood committees on various streets also organize their own Catalan-style Halloween celebrations—some staying true to the traditional castanyada, others leaning more toward Anglo-Saxon culture or Mexico’s Day of the Dead, and still others blending all three concepts.
In total, more than 70 community centers or neighborhood associations from all corners of the city have prepared their own neighborhood festivals to bring together local residents and celebrate the “scariest night of the year.” This is especially true in the Sants and Gràcia neighborhoods, where the festivities will take place on many of their streets with music, food, and drinks until 1:00 a.m.
Below, you’ll find the schedule listing all the participating streets and districts, from Les Corts to Sant Martí.
