It was announced in January and now the Board of Directors of the corporation has approved the creation of 2CAT, RTVE’s channel in Catalan, with the idea of making “a generalist channel with a vocation of proximity and that reflects a diverse, modern and proud of its roots Catalonia”.
And although the birth of this channel was already known, the date was missing:it will be on September 11th, on the Diada de Catalunya, when 2CAT will start with test broadcasts.
RTVE has confirmed that the new channel will be directed by Oriol Nolis, while Laura Folguera will be in charge of content management. The production will be carried out from the Production Center of Sant Cugat, thus reinforcing the commitment of the corporation with the linguistic diversity and the diffusion of the Catalan language.
Dalmau has advanced that the Government of the Generalitat and Moncloa will sign in April the agreement that will make official the creation of 2CAT. This agreement seeks to guarantee the stability of the channel for at least 15 years.
Where can 2CAT be tuned in?
Although it was initially planned to broadcast 2CAT through La 2, it will finally have its own frequency within the second multiplex available in Catalonia, occupying the space occupied by 8Tv until its closure in 2023.
As for the contents, they will be distributed, approximately, in 50% for the Corporació Catalana de Mitjans Audiovisuals (CCMA), 25% for RTVE and the remaining 25% for a private operator, although this proposal is still to be specified.
Over the next few months, more details of the programming, which will seek to become a benchmark for television in Catalan, will be specified.
