They don’t call it an “airtrain” but they could. Barcelona will soon have a new, fast and efficient connection between the city center and the airport.
This has been announced by Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC), which has explained that by the end of 2025 will begin to circulate a railroad that will connect Barcelona with El Prat airport in just 2o minutes.
The trains will run with a frequency of 15 minutes, offering a fast and convenient option for travelers, in a service that will begin testing at the end of next year.
22 kilometers from Sant Andreu to Prat
The new line, currently under construction, will be 22.7 kilometers long, making it one of the longest lines in Barcelona.
The route will cross the entire city through 9 stations: Sant Andreu, Sagrera, El Clot, Passeig de Gràcia, Sants, Bellvitge, El Prat, Airport T-2 and Airport T-1. The journey time will be about 20 minutes from Pg. de Gràcia to T1.
Trains specially designed to carry passengers
The project, with a budget of 177 million euros , includes the construction of 10 state-of-the-art trains by Alstom at its Santa Perpètua de Mogoda plant. These convoys are specially designed to meet the needs of air passengers, with ample luggage spaces and wider aisles to facilitate movement with suitcases.
Each train will consist of five cars, with a total of 10 doors on each side, 209 seats and a capacity for 656 passengers. In addition, they will be equipped with 20 information screens on the route and 9 screens that will show real-time data on flight departures and arrivals.
The project was presented during the Smart City Expo World Congress by Sergio Boya, director of Alstom in Catalonia, the company building the convoys.
