The sea, the fine sand beneath your feet, and that sun that invites you to disconnect from it all. Summer in Barcelona has a special light, a magnetism that draws thousands of people to its coastline to enjoy a day of relaxation. However, sometimes the sea breeze is interrupted by a moment of carelessness and the unpleasant surprise of discovering that your belongings have disappeared.
To prevent beachgoers from being left stranded after a theft, the Barcelona City Council has launched a call for bids to purchase emergency clothing kits. These sets of clothing will be made available to the City Police Beach Unit with the aim of providing immediate assistance to those who are literally left with only the clothes on their backs following an incident on the beach.
A basic emergency kit
The assistance package is designed to meet the essential needs of anyone who has lost their clothing. They have been designed in a unisex style and come in a wide range of sizes, from children’s sizes up to 3XL, with the aim of ensuring minimum standards of protection and health.
Each of these kits includes:
- White cotton T-shirt: short-sleeved with a crew neck, featuring the city’s emblem printed in red on the chest.
- Shorts: navy blue, with an elastic waistband featuring a drawstring and side pockets; in this case, without any logo.
- Beach flip-flops: made of EVA rubber with a PVC strap, available in sizes 36 through 44.
- Backpack with handles: made of white nylon, waterproof, with reinforced corners, and bearing the city’s seal.
- A one-way metro ticket to get home.
Forecasts for the coming summers
Although summer thefts are a current reality, the procurement of this material has been planned with an eye toward the medium-term future. The procurement documents specify that these clothing sets will not begin to be distributed during the current season but will be reserved for the summer seasons of 2027 and 2028, with the possibility of extending the service for two additional years.
The budget allocated for this initiative includes a fixed annual investment to supply 450 kits per season. The administrative process is currently in the public bidding announcement phase to select the supplier that will be responsible for manufacturing and printing the garments according to the required technical specifications.
