The smell of salt air and the desire to take refuge in the sea are already felt in every corner of the coast. With the arrival of the heat, the special plan coordinated by the Generalitat’s Civil Protection agency officially kicks off to prevent and monitor incidents that may affect those seeking relief on Catalan beaches, in swimming pools, and in inland waters. This initiative begins this Monday and will remain fully operational until September 15.
In this campaign, authorities are urging citizens to exercise caution and will pay special attention to older adults visiting the coast. They also remind the public of the importance of adults maintaining strict supervision of children in swimming pools to prevent drownings and accidents. For any emergency situation, the emergency number to call remains 112.
Real-time coordination and technical support
The Catalonia Operational Coordination Center (CECAT) will oversee this daily monitoring in constant communication with the Medical Emergency System (SEM) and the local municipalities responsible for public safety. To ensure optimal coverage, two additional professionals have been assigned exclusively to coastal surveillance. Additionally, SEM personnel will once again be stationed at the emergency headquarters to expedite information sharing in the event of any aquatic incident.
Sea conditions, just a click away
One of the key tools once again available to the public is the beach viewer web platform. Through this interactive map, users can check in real time which areas have lifeguard services, the color of the flag flying at any given moment, and the presence or danger posed by jellyfish. The portal also details the services available at each beach, ranging from the presence of showers and restrooms to the characteristics of the sand, the type of slope, and parking areas.
Calendar and schedules for swimmers in Barcelona
For those who choose Barcelona’s beaches, lifeguard services, first aid, and public facilities are organized according to two specific periods throughout the year:
Mid-season at the beaches
- Dates of implementation: March 28–31; April 1–6; every weekend and April 27–30; May 1–29; September 14–27; and October 3–4.
- Lifeguard and rescue service: From 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
- Public restrooms open: From 10:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Beach High Season
- Dates of implementation: May 30 to September 13.
- Lifeguard and rescue service: From 10:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
