Bola de Drac, Follet Tortuga… The Catalan translation of Akira Toriyama’s anime is engraved in the memory of several generations of Catalans, who grew up following Son Goku on TV3 in his search for the dragon balls.
Now, Goku and all his characters will speak Catalan again thanks to the pre-agreement with Toei Animation signed by the digital platform 3Cat and SX3, which will offer “Bola de Drac”, “Bola de Drac Z” and “Bola de Drac Super” on their channels.
In this way 3Cat recovers the first seasons of the mythical series by Akira Toriyama, and incorporates “Bola de Drac Súper” (2015-2018), which will be broadcast for the first time in Catalan. In total, 575 chapters and the free transfer of the Catalan dubbing to be able to distribute it to other platforms internationally.
However, we have some hard news: the songs will not be in Catalan. By indications of the producer, the soundtrack has to be broadcast in the original language, Japanese, anywhere in the world, so the Catalans will have to follow the melody singing in Catalan in our head,
Això sí, les cançons de la sèrie no sonaran en català. According to the producer’s instructions, the soundtrack has to be broadcast in the original language, Japanese, both here in Catalonia and in any other country in the world.
Where to watch Bola de Drac in Catalan?
It’s very simple. Bola de Drac is available from Tuesday, November 26th on the 3Cat and Sx3 (the former Super 3) platforms.
In both cases just go to the websites and,if the series does not appear on the front page, search for “Bola de Drac” in the search engine and sit down to relive your childhood.
A Japanese series that is a key tool for the Catalan language
The rebroadcast of the trilogy coincides with the 40th anniversary of the series’ premiere and is announced 30 years after the broadcast of its first episode in Catalan on TV3.
The series arrived in the 90s on Catalan TV, was the first anime that could be seen in this language and has become a benchmark of anime in Catalan at the time. In addition, it is considered that its success among viewers at a time when the only audiovisual support was television helped, in large part, to the expansion in Catalan among several generations.
Therefore, the recovery for Catalan of Son Goku and, in general, of successful series, was a claim that was made to TV3 and that public television now satisfies with the inclusion, 30 years after this myth of anime, which wants to serve to continue breaking its audience records, with nearly two million users only last month.
