The clock has started ticking. As of Monday, March 23, the Barcelona City Council has opened the registration process so that all residents and authorized users of the northbound lane of Via Laietana can register their vehicles and thus avoid the €90 fines that will be imposed starting next April.
The access control cameras with automatic fines will go into operation on April 27, five weeks from now, and those driving without authorization will face a fine of that amount.
The Ciutat Vella district began distributing information on Monday to all households in the neighborhoods of Gòtic, Sant Pere, Santa Caterina, La Ribera, and La Barceloneta to explain how the system works and how to obtain authorization.
The process can be completed online, in person at the citizen service offices, or by phone at 010.
Who is permitted to drive in the northbound direction on Via Laietana
The northbound lane of Via Laietana will be reserved for public transportation—lines V15, 47, and neighborhood bus 120—taxis, emergency service vehicles, and other public services.
As for private individuals, residents registered in the neighborhoods of Gòtic, Sant Pere, Santa Caterina, La Ribera, and La Barceloneta will be permitted to drive, as well as vehicles requested by these residents with prior authorization or by parking lot owners in those neighborhoods.
People with reduced mobility who have a parking space in the area, users of parking lots located in the affected neighborhoods, and customers of establishments such as auto repair shops, hotels, hostels, and guesthouses located in Sant Pere, Santa Caterina, and La Ribera will also be authorized.
Urban goods delivery vehicles will be allowed access to Plaza de Antoni Maura from Monday through Saturday during two time slots: from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
This initiative is part of the renovation of Via Laietana, which includes sidewalks up to more than four meters wide, a new bike lane, and priority for buses in both directions.
