Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) will add a new train to Metro Line 5 during the morning rush hour following Holy Week, bringing the number of trains running on the blue line to 38. With this increase, the frequency of service between 7:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. will be 2 minutes and 24 seconds.
The measure responds to the sustained increase in ridership on Line 5 and is made possible by the track renovation work carried out in the summer of 2024 between the Cornellà and Collblanc stations, during which crossover switches were installed to allow for an increased number of trains in service.
The 37th train was already added at the end of 2024, and now the 38th will be added.
TMB President Laia Bonet noted that the increase in demand “has intensified now, on some sections, due to the Rodalies crisis,” although she stated that “the metro network is handling this increase in ridership well.”
The next service increase, on Line 1
The L5 will not be the only service enhancement this year. TMB is also working to add an additional train to Line 1 during the morning rush hour.
Lines 1 and 5 account for more than half of the ridership across the entire metro network, and the increase in ticket validations over the past year has not been limited to peak hours but has extended particularly to off-peak hours in the afternoon and on weekends, according to city hall data.
