Few rituals are as quintessentially Barcelonian as seeking out the sea breeze as the July heat begins to intensify. But the experience changes completely if, in addition to the sand between your toes and the sound of the waves in the background, what you have before you is an entire symphony orchestra performing some of the greatest milestones in the history of music. That perfect combination of high culture and the more casual, relaxed spirit of Barceloneta is what has turned Clàssica a la Platja into one of the city’s summer highlights—a true mass phenomenon that no one wants to miss.
The dates chosen for this new edition are July 8 and 9, and the venue will once again be the iconic Sant Sebastià beach. Aftera previous edition that was heavily overshadowed by the America’s Cup, the event returns this summer to the normalcy of its best years. The organizers are projecting a conservative estimate of about 22,000 attendees per night, although on previous occasions the local police have counted as many as 30,000 people enjoying the music under the stars. Best of all, admission remains completely free, funded directly through the City Council’s tourist tax.
The city’s two major musical institutions, the Gran Teatre del Liceu and L’Auditori, have prepared programs designed to appeal to both the most discerning music lovers and those approaching the genre for the first time. For this edition, extra effort has been made in the technical setup, improving the sound system with a special stereo device so that the music can be heard with complete clarity along the 250 meters of beach. Additionally, accessibility measures will be maintained with expanded spaces for people with reduced mobility and vibrating backpacks so that deaf people can enjoy the experience. At the same time, the spirit of the festival will also reach the city’s hospitals and nursing homes through the choirs of the Orfeó Català, ensuring that the music reaches everywhere.

Here are the two days of concerts that will take place on Barceloneta Beach as part of Clàssica a la Platja.
Opening Concert: Dance and Emotion by the Sea
Date and time: Wednesday, July 8 at 9:00 p.m. Group: Orquestra del Gran Teatre del Liceu, conducted by Josep Pons in his emotional musical farewell to the beach. Program: Liceu Simfònic, music for everyone, a performance featuring stage direction by Anna Ponces and a voice-over that will reveal the orchestra’s secrets. Highlights and repertoire: A journey through the apotheosis of rhythm, including Brahms’ Hungarian Dance, Dvořák’s Slavonic Dance, Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker Suite, the passion of Manuel de Falla’s El amor brujo, the rhythms of Ginastera’s Estancia, and Ravel’s iconic Boléro.
Second night: An imaginary symphony under the stars
Date and time: Thursday, July 9 at 9:00 p.m. Group: Barcelona Symphony Orchestra and National Orchestra of Catalonia (OBC), conducted by Ludovic Morlot. Program: An Imaginary Symphony, an original musical puzzle constructed from major movements of European symphonic music. Highlights and repertoire: The evening will unfold through the second movement of Borodin’s Symphony No. 2, the lyricism of Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2, the power of Brahms’ Symphony No. 3, the Allegretto grazioso from Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8, and the vibrant and exuberant Finale of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4.
