Work on the new Mercat de l’Abaceria, in the heart of the Gràcia district, is progressing at a good pace and we can already begin to see what the roof will look like , reminiscent, in the first instance, of the iconic mosaic of the Mercat de Santa Caterina.
The main metal structure and the concrete bases of the basements and attics have already been completed, and now the work is focusing on the façade cladding, glazing, wooden lattices and other exterior elements, while progress is being made on installations and interior finishes in order to optimize construction times and finish in 2026.
A colorful ceramic roof
As we said, the market is currently working on the roof with red, orange, blue and yellow ceramic panels which, although they are not the same as the Santa Caterina mosaic, do bring color to the roof of the gracienc market, illuminating its entire surface.
In addition to the striking colors, the roof will incorporate photovoltaic panels, completing a sustainable and modern design that will mark the silhouette of the building.
Inside the market, the structures that will support the signs, blinds and store equipment have already been installed. Outside, work is being carried out on the stores on Carrers Torrijos and Puigmartí, as well as on the interior paving and the building’s installations.
The main works are expected to be completed by the end of 2025. From then on, work will begin on the adaptation of the market stalls and the urbanization of the surroundings, managed by the District of Gràcia through BIMSA.
An investment of 22 million euros
The work on the new market was awarded for 22.5 million euros, but the total investment of the entire intervention will reach 38 million, including the construction and maintenance of the provisional market and the change of direction of Travessera de Gràcia.
Until it opens, the Mercat will continue to operate in its provisional location on Passeig de Sant Joan.
