The August heat in Barcelona has one surefire antidote: losing yourself beneath canopies of papier-mâché, wood, and recycled garlands. From August 15 through this coming Friday, the 21st, the Gràcia Festival transforms the neighborhood’s streets into the beating heart of the city. With twenty-three streets decked out in festive decorations—five of which share a common theme this year—the neighborhood celebration unfurls its self-organized magic, offering activities, family workshops, and, of course, a flood of live music for all tastes.
Beyond the street crafts, the main attraction during these days is an endless array of music that springs from the very fabric of the neighborhood. Each neighborhood committee has prepared its own program, which intertwines with now-essential events like the Festigàbal, where the legendary Heliogàbal venue transforms the Sedeta Gardens into a massive open-air stage. What’s more, to ensure that the only concern of the night is tuning in to the music and dancing the night away, public transportation is on the night owls’ side: the city’s metro runs nonstop for 67 consecutive hours.
