Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) will extend the route of the X1 in September to the end of Diagonal Avenue, adding seven new stops that will strengthen connections to the city’s university, healthcare, and business districts.
MB will extend the route of the X1 express line from Plaça Francesc Macià to Avinguda Albert Bastardas, at the end of Diagonal.
The measure will take effect in September, to coincide with the start of the 2026-2027 academic year.
Of the seven announced stops, three will be on the outbound route, three on the return route, and one serving as both the starting and ending point, with stops at Maria Cristina, Palau Reial, and Zona Universitaria, and the route ending at the Torre Melina Gardens.
One of the objectives of the expansion is to enhance intermodal connectivity: the new extension will provide connections to the metro, the tram, and intercity and metropolitan bus lines coming from the Baix Llobregat region.
It will also connect to the area of the future Clínic Hospital.
To maintain the frequency, regularity, speed, and reliability of the service, TMB will add two new buses from the current reserve fleet, a measure that will not affect service on the network’s other bus lines.
Possible extension to Llacuna
TMB is also studying the possibility of extending the X1 in the other direction to the Llacuna metro station.
However, this new route is contingent on the urban development projects currently underway in that area, so no confirmed date has been set at this time.
The XpresBus network currently has three lines that accumulate 6.8 million validations and transport approximately 260,000 passengers per month.
The X1 has been in operation since September 2021, connecting Francesc Macià Square with Glòries Catalanes Square.
