The Barcelona City Council began enforcing fines on Monday against motorcycles that violate sidewalk parking regulations. The police operation is focusing in this initial phase on the neighborhoods of Sants, Hostafrancs, and La Bordeta, following an increase in neighborhood protests over the occupation of pedestrian space.
The measure follows an awareness campaign that began on April 13. For seven days, officers and municipal staff distributed informational materials to communicate the changes to the traffic ordinance that has been in effect since February 2025. Intensive enforcement will continue in this area until April 26.
Fines of up to 500 euros for improperly parked motorcycles
The penalty system establishes fines ranging from 50 to 500 euros depending on the danger posed and the location of the vehicle. Parking on sidewalks less than three meters wide or blocking trash containers will result in a 50-euro fine.
Fines will amount to 100 euros if a vehicle blocks crosswalks or bike lanes, or if it is secured to street furniture such as traffic lights, benches, or trees. Meanwhile, the use of bike lanes for loading and unloading by delivery drivers will result in fines of 200 euros.
The maximum fine of 500 euros will be reserved for violations committed in front of entrances to hospitals and schools.
Priority monitoring points
The City Police will prioritize enforcement efforts on key thoroughfares such as Olzinelles Street, Huesca Square, and the area surrounding the Sants Market. Additionally , Consell de Cent, Rector Triadó, and Melcior de Palau streets will see a specific police presence. Once this operation concludes, the city council will shift enforcement efforts to other areas such as Marina or Poble-sec.
The municipal administration has designated more than 2,500 new on-street parking spaces specifically for motorcycles. The local government has reiterated that the goal of this regulation is to promote coexistence and pedestrian safety, especially in high-traffic areas.
