Barcelona will build the city’s first sports center in a pavilion at Fira Barcelona, in the Sants-Montjuïc district. The Institut Barcelona Esports (IBE) and the district have begun studies to transform Pavilion 2 in the Poble-sec neighborhood into a permanent facility, equipped with two 44 × 23 meter multi-sports courts, multi-purpose rooms on an upper level, changing rooms, bleachers and other services.
The new sports center will be located in Rius i Taulet and will replace the current Italy pavilion, which will be demolished.
Before its demise, the new pavilion is expected to be ready and operational to avoid disruptions to the facilities of the district’s clubs.
In addition, the rearrangement of the space will favor the connection with nearby infrastructures, such as the Jacint Verdaguer School.
The first phase of the works will be executed in 2026 with a budget of 5 million euros.
With this initiative, the district will shorten the deadlines for the creation of a more versatile and larger capacity sports center, such as the one initially planned for 2029 in the residential area of the MPGM Fira Montjuïc. This space will now be used for public housing or other neighborhood projects.
