The arrival of Christmas is synonymous with fir and Christmas tree at home, decorated and crowned with a star. And although in Barcelona you can find your fir tree in Santa Llùcia or in any other of the city’s Christmas fairs, there is a Christmas market in a village of 200 people where you can go to cut your own Christmas tree.
This is the mythical Fira de l’Abet d’Espinelves, a village in the Osona region, which organizes a fair that has been held since 1981 and has become one of the most emblematic Christmas markets in the region.
When is the Fira de l’Abet d’Espinelves?
From November 30 to December 8 in Espinelves (Osona).
What can you do at the Fira de l’Abet d’Espinelves?
The fair revolves around locally produced fir, especially the popular Masjoanis fir, known for its density and resistance. Local producers offer high quality specimens, promoting sustainable consumption and supporting the rural economy. In addition, visitors have the opportunity to learn firsthand how these trees are grown and cared for, in a commitment to keep alive a tradition that connects with nature.
It is not limited to the sale of trees. The streets of Espinelves are full of life with craft stalls, local gastronomic products and cultural activities that make it an ideal destination for the whole family. From cured meats and cheeses from the region to honey and Christmas sweets, the fair is a showcase for the best of Catalan gastronomy.
How to get to Espinelves
Espinelves is located between Vic and Girona. It is easy to reach by car, but due to the crowds on weekends it is advisable to go early to avoid the crowds.
By car, the journey takes about 1 hour and the usual route from Barcelona is to take the C-33 towards the C-17 towards Vic, and then the C-25 until exit 199 towards Espinelves.
