MACBA is definitely living times of change. The works that have already begun will forever change its face, expelling skaters and modifying what used to be one of the most iconic postcards of the city. Now, a new news shakes the image of the square and makes the skaters who are no longer there mourn another loss: that of the fleca els Àngels, a century-old bakery that is now being transferred due to retirement.
The “se traspasa” sign already hangs on its walls, announcing that Juana Solé will be leaving this corner shop with its characteristic stained glass windows. She and her husband took over in 1985 from a bakery that has existed since 1915.
It is difficult to imagine all the ravales that have seen this place, which hides in its basement a bakery of the past, where the Solé make bread at night to sell it in the morning.
Once made, they go up to their long counter, which follows the corner shape of the place, their breads and brioches, but also the cookies that have given them their name lately and that have fed so many generations of neighbors, students and skaters of the neighborhood, who find in this bakery a small refuge from the gentrifying dynamics of the neighborhood. A small rarity.
Now, this bakery that received in 2015 the Centennial Commercial Establishment award from the Ajuntament, is waiting for someone to take its baton (just call the number on the transfer sign).
In order not to say goodbye to another historic business in the neighborhood and in a square, that of MACBA, the bakery has confirmed to Barcelona Secreta that they are looking for a new owner to ensure the continuity of the business. “It will not be transferred until this happens,” they clarify.
