A free, open-air museum accessible to everyone. This will be the new Geological Garden , an innovative project that will turn an urban space into the first open-air museum in the city and one of the most spectacular parks in Barcelona.
This has been announced by Barcelona and the University of Barcelona, who explain that this garden, which will be in the district of Les Corts, in Menéndez y Pelayo street, between Martí Franquès and Joan XXIII avenue, will be owned by the University of Barcelona (UB) but will be open to all citizens.
A journey through the history of geology
The Geological Garden will occupy an area of 1,830 m² and aims to combine scientific dissemination and education with research and teaching, bringing geology and Earth sciences closer to those who visit it.
The museum will have four thematic spaces designed to offer an immersive and educational experience. The first represents geological time. It will be a tour built with different types of rocks formed in the last 500 million years. Each material will be related to its corresponding time stage.
The second space is dedicated to the Earth, and will show the internal structure of this planet. It will show the layers of the globe, built with representative materials. The third is the geological wall-cut Ecors, which will represent a cut of the earth’s crust in our territory. In this space it will be possible to observe the internal structure of the subsoil.
The fourth and last space is that of applications and processes. Its objective is to explain the applications of geology and natural materials throughout the history of mankind. There will be rocks related to the formation of minerals that have played a fundamental role in the development of our society.
